Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. WILLIAM CATES is a son of Isaiah Cates, was born in Rockcastle County, and reared in Madison. He came to Grant in 1857, and was married to Miss Zerilda Richardson. Six children have blessed their union--three boys and three girls--all of whom are yet living, save Richard, the youngest, who died last autumn in Ludlow. For many years Mr. Cates followed mercantile pursuits in Grant County in the neighborhood of Downingsville, and in that country he became very popular. He was first elected to the office of Jailer in Grant County ten years ago, and is now serving his third term. He has had strong and bitter opposition in every race he made, but has always come out victorious, despite false friends and open enemies. He has made an efficient and popular official, and is well-known to almost every man, woman and child in Grant, and has a friend in all of them. In politics, "Uncle Billy" as he is familiarly called, was born a Democrat, and has remained one ever since. He has never "scratched" a ticket during the fifty years he has been a voter, and it is not likely that he ever will. He has always stood faithfully by the nominees and contributed liberally to the campaign fund. Today he stands six feet, two in his stockings, and is as erect as when a boy. He wears a patriarchal beard, and would attract attention wherever he might go. Cates Richardson = Rockcastle-KY Madison-KY http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/grant/cates.w.txt
