CHARLEY ATKINS.  One of the neatest and best country stores in Grant
County is the store of Charlie Atkins at Sherman, in this county. 
Desirably located in a splendid good building built for the purpose, 
stocked with seasonable goods bought at a fair price and presided over 
by as clever a gentleman as there is in Grant County, makes it a mecca 
toward which most of the people in the neighborhood of Sherman turn 
their steps when they want to buy anything in his line.  Mr. Atkins is 
one of the youngest merchants in the county.  He is a son of James 
Atkins and Matilda (Booth) Atkins, and was born in Covington, Kentucky 
on the 5th day of May, 1868.  His father moved to Grant County and 
young Atkins came with him, and here he went to school and obtained a 
fairly good business education.  In 1899 he decided to go into the 
mercantile business and located at Sherman.  He built the commodious 
store room in which he does business, and has fitted himself up to do 
the business in his vicinity, and has, perhaps, the largest country 
trade of any purely country store in the country.  His honest methods 
and fair dealing have won for him a great many customers.  March 16, 
1898, he was united in marriage to Miss Addie Blackburn, a daughter of 
the late R. J. Blackburn, and to them one child has been born.  Mr. 
Atkins and his good wife are members of the Baptist Church at Mount
Zion, and are a very lovable couple.  In politics Mr. Atkins is a
Republican.
