The grandfather of Garrett Coovert was also a native of New Jersey, was a tanner and a farmer, and served seven years in the Revolutionary war. He died a member of the Presbyterian Church. Garrett Coovert was born in Mercer County, Ky., May 9, 1815, but moved to Garrard County in 1838 and settled on a garden plot of six acres, which he cultivates in summer, devoting the winter months to the making and repairing of shoes. In 1839 he married Miss Elizabeth Woods, who, with himself, is a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Coovert is also an Odd Fellow.
