DR. THOMAS CAVIN ARMSTRONG was born November 17, 1828, in Fayette County,
Ky., but in 1851 located at Bryantsville, Garrard County.  His father,
Andrew Hogue Armstrong, a native of Pennsylvania, removed in childhood, with
his parents, to Kentucky, graduated at Transylvania University, located on a
farm near Walnut Hill, Fayette County, was a slave-holder, a captain of
militia, forty years an elder in the Presbyterian Church, and died February
22, 1852, at the age of sixty-two years.  He was the son of Andrew 
Armstrong, a native of Ireland, a staunch Presbyterian, who
immigrated to Pennsylvania on account of religious persecution, soon
removed to North Elkhorn, Fayette County, Ky., was a soldier in the war of
1812, and died at Terre Haute, Ind., about 1832, aged nearly ninety years.
He married Ann Hogue, a Scotch lady, and their offspring were William, of
Texas; Andrew H. and Ann (Cruft), of Terre Haute,  Andrew H., who married
Jane, a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Erwin) Cavin, of Fayette County
(born March 4, 1792; died November 5, 1859), and from this union sprang Ann
(Irvin and Lyle), William (deceased), Emeline (Browning), Dr. John A.,
LaFayette, James W., Thomas C., Jane (deceased), and DeWitt Clinton.
Thomas C. married, June 11, 1852, Miss Sybelle, daughter of James and
Sallie A. (Patton) Dunn, of Garrard County (born November 5, 1837), and to
them have been born John A., Jane (Taylor), and DeWitt C.  In 1848 our
subject began the study of medicine with Drs. Letcher and Bell, of
Lexington, and afterward with Dr. E.L. Dudley.  He attended two courses of
lectures at Transylvania University, Lexington, and graduated at the
Kentucky School of Medicine, Louisville, in 1851, since which time he has
been successfully engaged at Bryantsville in a lucrative practice.  Dr.
Armstrong is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and also a
member of the K. of H.  In politics he is a Democrat and a prohibitionist.
