Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Gallatin Co. JAMES W. SPENCER, a farmer and stock grower of Gallatin County, Ky., was born September 3, 1834. His father, Edward Spencer, a native of Kentucky, was born in 1796; was a farmer, and married Lucy Moore, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Moore, of Virginia, who bore him three sons and six daughters, of whom the subject of this sketch is the eighth child. Edward Spencer, the paternal grandfather of James W., a native of Virginia, settled in Gallatin County where he died. James W. Spencer was educated in the common schools of Gallatin County; has always been a farmer, and now owns 165 acres of well cultivated land. November 28, 1882, he married Lelia Ruddell, of Gallatin County, daughter of James C. and Ann Ruddell. One son and one daughter were born to this union: Charles C. and Lucy M.
