ROBERT E. FOSTER, druggist and postmaster at Glencoe, Ky., was born 
near Napoleon, Gallatin Co., Ky., May 3, 1830.  His father, Thomas 
Foster, a native of Scott County, was born in 1804, and was a well-to-do
farmer.  He married ELiza Carlton, a native of Virginia, and a daughter 
of Edwin and Sarah (Mournin) Carlton, natives of Maryland.  The birth 
of two sons and one daughter followed their union, of whom the subject 
of this sketch is the eldest; they were both members of the Baptist 
Church for many years, and firm supporters of its principles.  Robert 
Foster, the paternal grandfather of Robert E., a native of Pennsylvania,
came to Kentucky about the year 1800, and first settled on a farm in 
Scott County, near Georgetown, where he remained until about 1816, and 
the removed with his family to Gallatin County, where he settled on a 
farm near the present site of Napoleon, and remained there until his 
death, which occurred in 1847; he took active part in the war of 1812 
under the command of Co. Richard M. Johnston, and participated in the 
battle of Tippecanoe.  The maternal grandfather of our subject was one 
of the earliest settlers of Grant County, Ky., in which county he died. 
Robert E. Foster was educated in the common schools of Gallatin County, 
where he secured an ordinary English education.  In 1833 he settled on 
a farm in Owen County, near Owenton, with his father, and in 1861-62 
engaged in merchandise at Eagle Hill, having living there for 
twenty-seven years, and acted as postmaster from 1848 to 1856.  In 
November 1869, he settled in Glencoe, Gallatin County, and for five 
years kept a hotel and livery stable.  September 12, 1855, he married 
Elizabeth Green, a native of Boone County, and a daughter of Thomas and 
Martha (Anderson) Greene, of Pennsylvania, and of Irish extraction.  The
birth of one son and four daughters followed their union: William E., a 
graduate of the Ohio Medical College, Cincinnati, Minnie, Eliza, Ella, 
Mattie, the latter a graduate of Kentucky College at Pewee Valley, 
Oldham County.  Politically Mr. Foster is a Republican, and has held the
office of postmaster at Glencoe since 1875.  He is a member of the 
Glencoe Lodge, and also of the F. & A. M., having attained the degree of
Master Mason, and also the chapter degree.  He is a consistent member of
the Baptist Church, and ranks among the best business men of Glencoe.  
His wife is a member of the Presbyterian Church.
