Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Gallatin Co. WILLIAM ELLIS is a native of Gallatin County, Ky., and was born May 6, 1820. His father, James Adams Ellis, a native of Henrico County, Va., born in 1781, was a farmer, and settled in Gallatin County in 1818 on a farm near Warsaw, where he died about 1856. He enlisted from Virginia in the war of 1812, under command of Capt. Chamberlain. He married Martha Roundtree, of Goochland County, Va., daughter of Richard and Lucy (Tate) Roundtree. Eight sons and two daughters were born to this union, the subject of this sketch being the seventh child. The grandfather, David Ellis, a native of Virginia, served in the war for independence. His wife's name was Moaning Harris. The maternal grandfather was also a Revolutionary soldier. William Ellis received his education principally at home, and has been a farmer all his life. He owns 150 acres of land, well cultivated, near Glencoe. In 1842 he married Almira Wilson, of Gallatin County, daughter of Captain William and Fannie (Garrett) Wilson, of Kentucky, who bore him one son and one daughter--Levin and Frances (the son deceased). Mrs. Ellis died in 1848; she was for many years a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Ellis next married, in 1848, Catherine L. A. Hostetler, of Kentucky. One son and one daughter blessed this union--William W. (deceased) and Mary J. His second wife died in 1858, a member of the Christian Church, and in 1879 Mr. Ellis married Elizabeth McClore, of Grant County, and daughter of William and Elizabeth (Wilson) McClore. Politically Mr. Ellis is a Republican. He was postmaster of Glencoe from 1856 to 1863, when he engaged in merchandising. Our subject claims to be a third cousin of ex-President John Adams. He is a member of the Christian Church, but his wife is a Presbyterian.
