Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., Gallatin Co. JAMES E. BUCHANAN was born in Gallatin County, August 30, 1846. His father, William E. Buchanan, also a native of Gallatin County, was born September 25, 1827, and is a farmer by occupation. He married Julia Ann Henry, a native of Bourbon County, and a daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Boze) Henry, natives, respectively, of Virginia and Kentucky. Five sons and seven daughters were born to this union, of whom the subject of this sketch is the eldest child. The paternal grandfather of James E. Buchanan, William M. Buchanan, was a native of Virginia, and was born about 1803. He first settled in Switzerland County, Ind., where he lived until 1837, when he moved with his family to Gallatin County, Ky., and settled on a farm near Warsaw. He engaged in merchandising for a short time, was one of the earliest settlers of Gallatin County, and took active part in the war of 1812. James E. Buchanan has been an active farmer all of his life, and is one of Gallatin County's most successful tobacco raisers; his education was obtained at the common schools, where he acquired a good knowledge of the English branches. August 2, 1865, he married Ellen J. Ellis, native of Gallatin County, and a daughter of James A. and Maria (Foley) Ellis, natives, respectively, of Virginia and Kentucky. The birth of four sons and five daughters followed their union, viz: James W., Henry F., Thomas M., Richard E., Lucy J., Anna M., Ella, Lenora and Daisy.
