Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Franklin Co. LAWRENCE TOBIN was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1817, a son of Lawrence and Kate (Doyle) Tobin. He came to the United States in 1840, and in 1841 came to Frankfort, Ky., and has been here ever since. He was a contractor on the Frankfort & Lexington (now the Louisville & Nashville) Railroad for several years, and had charge of the repairs from Lexington to Midway for several years. He also had charge of repairs of the Louisville & Nashville, from Louisville to Frankfort, about two years. In 1852 he went into the grocery business in Frankfort, has been very successful; is still in the business, and owns several houses and lots in the city. In 1847 he married Mary Lenard, of Lexington, Ky., daughter of John Lenard. Nine children have blessed this union, eight living, viz.: Richard, the eldest, who married Annie Haly and had four children: Richard, Lucille, Anna and Denis. Richard is the superintendent of the Feeble Minded Institute. John was the second born; Kate, the third child, married G. D. Boldrick and had four children: Mary, George, John and William C. Hugh, the third son and fourth child, married Kate Kuhen, and one child has been born to them, Hugh, Jr. Hugh is a physician, and has a government position in Colorado. The remaining children born to Lawrence Tobin are James, Rose, Susie and Annie. Mr. Tobin has 140 acres of land in Franklin County, and he, his wife and all his children are members of the Catholic Church.
