N. B. SMITH, born in Franklin County, September 11, 1858, is the eldest
son of William and Mary E. (Moore) Smith.  The father was born in
Franklin County August 14, 1831, and has always been a farmer and stock
raiser.  The paternal grandfather, Jesse, was born in Delaware, came to
Kentucky in an early day, and settled in Franklin County.  N. B. Smith 
was reared in Franklin County, and educated at the common schools.  He 
remained on the farm with his father until October 11, 1880.  He then 
went to Frankfort to clerk for J. M. Pendleton, and remained two years; 
then clerked in other stores in Frankfort until June, 1883.  He then 
went back to his father's farm and remained until October 7, 1884; then 
was appointed deputy county clerk under J. G. Crockett, and held this 
position until May 20, 1885, when Mr. Crockett died.  Then Mr. Smith was
appointed county clerk until September, 1885, when he was elected for 
one year to fill out the expired term of Mr. Crockett, and at the close 
of the year was re-elected for another term (four years).  He married 
Miss Sallie A. Graves, of Franklin County, daughter of W. D. and Sallie
A. (King) Graves, and one child has blessed their union, Lizzie H.  Mr. 
and Mrs. Smith are members of the Christian Church.
