Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Franklin Co. JOHN F. CHURCH is a native of Franklin County, Ky., born October 11, 1815, and is the sixth son of Thomas and Mary (White) Church. The grandfather, Robert Church, came from Virginia to Franklin County about the coming of the first settlers, and was a soldier under Gen. Harrison. His brother, William Church, was captain of a Franklin company under the command of R. M. Johnson, at the battle of the Thames, where Tecumseh was killed. The grandfather, Ambrose White, before he brought his family to Kentucky, visited the territory, was wounded and captured by the Indians, and kept a prisoner for four years. Both grandfathers died in Franklin County. Thomas Church was an Indian scout employed by the Government when the Indians were plundering the country, and was a great buffalo hunter in the early settlement of the country, and about 1830 died, at the age of sixty-seven. John F. Church and his brother William, who was born May 18, 1806, are the only living of ten children. John F. was married December 13, 1838, to Caroline Stedman, a sister of Ebenezer Stedman, of Boston. Eight children have been born to them: Thomas, Mary, Frank, Ned, Henry, Lea, Hallie and Drew.
