Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, 1887 Floyd County ALEXANDER H. STEWART, M.D., is a native of Perry (now Knott) County, Ky., was born December 7, 1852, and is a son of Jasper and Nancy (Mullins) Stewart. Jasper Stewart, a widely known physician of Perry County, was born in 1830. William Stewart, grandfather of our subject, was a native of Knox County, Ky., and was a son of Alexander Stewart, a native of Scotland. Booker Williams, maternal grandfather of Dr. A.H. Stewart was a native of Virginia. Our subject received his earlier education at Whitesburg Academy, Letcher County, and in the Abingdon District High School at Temple Hill, Va. In 1876 he began the study of medicine under his father, and after three years' attendance at the Ohio Medical College, graduated in 1882, entered the practice soon after at Prestonburg, where he still is actively engaged in his profession. In 1872 he married Miss Margaret Pigman, a native of Letcher County, who died in 1876, leaving two children, sons, R. Lee and R. B. Stewart. In 1887 the Doctor was elected as the Republican nominee joint State Senator for the Thirty-third District, composed of nine counties, Floyd (his present home) Pike, Martin, Letcher, Perry, Knott, Leslie, Harlan and Clay, by a majority of 3,613 against Captain John May, of Pike County. The Doctor is a Freemason, a Republican, and for several years has been examiner of applicants for pensions.
