Fleming County

DR. ROBERT A. LIGHTFOOT was born in Fleming County, Ky., April 19, 1827, and
is the second in a family of seven children, born to William and Elizabeth
(Caldwell) Lightfoot.  William Lightfoot was born June 16, 1796, in Culpeper
County, Va., and is still living in his ninety-second year; he is a son of
Robert Lightfoot, of Virginia, who emigrated to Kentucky, about 1804; the
family are of Scotch descent and have been farmers by occupation.  William
is a member of the Christian Church.  Mrs. Elizabeth Lightfoot was a
daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Farris) Caldwell, of Fleming County, Ky.
Andrew Caldwell was a native of Ireland and a farmer.  Mrs. Lightfoot died
in 1849.  Dr. Robert A. Lightfoot was reared on a farm, receiving his
literary education at the common schools and at Richland Academy.  He began
the study of medicine in 1850 with Dr. John Shackelford, of Maysville, Ky.,
and graduated from the University of Louisville in March, 1855; he located
in Maysville in partnership with his former instructor, Dr. Shackelford,
going to Flemingsburg in August as a relief doctor during the cholera
epidemic, where he has since been actively engaged.  He served over three
years in the Confederate army, as surgeon of Col. E.F. Clay's battalion.  He
was captured in 1864 at the battle of Half Mountain, eastern Kentucky, and
was confined in Louisville, Fortress Monroe and in Fort Delaware about five
months, being exchanged for the celebrated Dr. Mary Walker, who was captured
by the Confederates as a spy, near Dalton, Georgia.  After his exchange Dr.
Lightfoot was on Lieutenant-General Early's staff and also had charge of the
Abingdon Hospital of Virginia.  May 26, 1856, he married Miss Sallie
Stockwell, a daughter of John Stockwell, of Fleming County.  They are the
parents now of five living children, Mary S., L. Pearce, Ida, Sallie and
Grace.  Gross R. Lightfoot, the eldest son, was a graduate of the Jefferson
Medical College, Philadelphia, when only nineteen years old, and a physician
of great promises; he died of blood poison October 30, 1879, aged twenty-two
years.  Mrs. Lightfoot is a member of the Episcopal Church.  The doctor is a
Mason, a K.T. Past Eminent Commander, and Past High Priest of the I.O.O.F.
He is also a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
