Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, 1887 Fleming County WILLIAM J. HENDRICK, a native of Fleming County, Ky., was born near Flemingsburg, March 22, 1855, and is the eldest child of James P. and Sophia (Darnall) Hendrick. James P. Hendrick was the son of Williamson and Mary (Thilman) Hendrick. The Thilmans were French Huguenots, of South Carolina. Williamson Hendrick was a native of Hanover County, Va., and a descendant of Steuben Hendrick, who settled on the James River in 1665. Mrs. Sophia Hendrick was the daughter of H.J. and Penelope (Palmer) Darnall. H.J. Darnall was the son of Charles Darnall, of Prince George County, Md., who was the fifth in descent from Col. Henry Darnall, of Prince George County, whose daughter, Mary, was the wife of Charles Carroll, of Carrollton. Penelope Darnall was the daughter of John and Sophia (Kemper) Palmer, the latter a daughter of Rev. James Kemper. Rev. James P. Hendrick, D.D., is a Presbyterian minister, and has been pastor of the church in Flemingsburg nearly thirty years. For many years he taught a classical school, and educated many Prominent men. William J. Hendrick was educated by his father at his school in Flemingsburg until sixteen years of age, when he entered the Junior class of Centre College, Danville, Ky., and graduated in 1873. He read law with Judge Sharswood, of Philadelphia, Penn., and returning to Kentucky pursued his studies and taught school two terms. He was admitted to the bar June 8, 1876, and has since been actively engaged in the practice of the legal profession. In 1881 he was a member of the Legislature, having been elected by a large majority. While a member of that body he was chairman of the Committee on Codes of Practice. September 25, 1878, Mr. Hendrick married Miss Mattie M. Harris, a daughter of John W. and Ann (McClure) Harris, the former president of the State Board of Agriculture of Missouri, and the latter a daughter of Dr. Vigil McClure, of Boone County, Mo. Mr. And Mrs. Hendrick are members of the Presbyterian Church.
