HISTORY OF FAYETTE COUNTY KENTUCKY, by Robert Peter, ed. by William H. Perrin, O. L. Baskin Co., Chicago, 1882. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press, Easley, SC, 1979. Page 773 LEVI P. SPURR, farmer, P. O. Athens, is a native of Athens Precinct, of which he has been a resident since his birth, which occurred May 13, 1840. His father, Richard Spurr, married Martha A. Prewitt, the history of whose family in Fayette County dates back to 1794. Their son, our subject, graduated at Bethany College, in the year 1859, and two years later formed a matrimonial alliance with Jennie E., daughter of Nathaniel and Arminta (Graves) Winn, a lady of distinguished old-time descent by both the male and female line, the Winns coming from Virginia to Fayette prior to the close of the last century, and representatives of the Graves family, being among the very earliest penetrators into the wilds of Kentucky. Mrs. Spurr's grandfather, Graves, came in with Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton, and was one of those intrepid pioneers who fought for the sylvan paradise they had come forth to clear and possess for themselves and their descendants. An interesting relic of these early times is in the possession of Mr. Spurr. It is the original document given by Patrick Henry to Daniel Boone, and whereby it was intended that a large tract of land should be conveyed to the sole ownership and disposition of the old Kentucky rifleman in recognition of his valuable military service. The "acknowledgement," for such it only proved, bears the signature of the distinguished statesman by whom it was granted, and the sate, December 28, 1780. Of the area of land mentioned in it, Mr. Spurr now owns and occupies a portion. He is an industrious farmer, is of the Christian Communion, and has a family of two sons: Richard W. and Leo.
