HISTORY OF FAYETTE COUNTY KENTUCKY, by Robert Peter, ed. by William H. Perrin, O. L. Baskin Co., Chicago, 1882. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press, Easley, SC, 1979. Page 770 H. C. PAYNE, farmer, P.O. Athens, comes of a family prominently identified with the material, educational, religious and political progress of the county since the time of its early settlement. His great-grandfather was one of the early pioneers of this region. He was of English and French descent. Henry C., the grandfather of our subject, was born in Fayette County, and married a lady of the Lewis family, not a few member of which attained military, political and other distinctions in connection with the defense and development of the settlements in Kentucky and the great commonwealth that has risen from noble seed, fructified by blood and tears, the growth being made strong and enduring, in that it advanced in the face of dangers and difficulties almost unparalleled in the history of this wide continent. Mr. Payne's father, Remus by name, was born and brought up in Fayette, but removed to Scott County, which he represented in the State Legislature one term. He subsequently went to Florida and there died in 1880, being then in the sixty-ninth year of his age: a member of the Christian Church. His wife, who had been Mary S. Talbott, died in 1843. Our subject was born in Scott County, and has been habituated since his youth to farming. He chose for a wife Laura, daughter of Alexander E. and Martha (Spurr) Prewitt, whose great grandfathers were both among the valorous Virginian adventurers, who came to develop and defend the lovely land of the "dark and bloody ground." Her grandfathers, by both lines, were also from Virginia. Her mother died in 1865; her father in 1877, at the age of sixty-one years, both being members of the Christian Church. The daughter has been left the old Prewitt homestead, consisting of 215 acres, besides which her husband is the possessor of 248 acres. They have two sons: Robert T. and Alexander P., and three daughters, Katie, Mattie P. and Laura. Mr. Payne holds the office of Justice of the peace.
