HERNDON, farmer, P. O. Donerail, born in Scott County, Ky., January 4, 1813, is the second of a family of four sons of John and Petsey (Thomson) Herndon. The father, born January 28, 1780, in Orange County, Va., son of Zachary Herndon, whose ancestors were of Scotch-Irish extraction, emigrated to Scott County, Ky., about the year 1780; located three miles north of Georgetown; was a pioneer of that locality, and continued there until his death, which occurred May 18, 1849; his wife preceded him October 8, 1832. They were both members of the Christian Church, he being one of the prominent and influential workers in that body. The children born to them were six in numberÄLunsford L., born March 11, 1811, resides in Scott County, a bachelor; Henry C., born January 2, 1815 married Mary E. Blackburn, resides at Great Crossings, Scott county, and is a physician, with three children: William, Lunsford and Susie; Rodes T. never married and resides in Henry County, Ky.; Mary J., deceased married G. W. Herndon; Amanda, deceased, was the wife of John G. C. Goodwin, of VA. Charles R. was a regular graduate of the Old Kentucky University, the called Bacon College, from which he obtained the degree of M. A., in 1835, being one of the first graduates. Since 1858, he has been a resident of Fayette County. His farm consists of 375 acres, situated at Donerail Station, and his residence is beautifully located. He is a member of the Christian Church. On March 21, 1839, he was married to Mary Collier, born July 17, 1823, in Bourbon County, Ky., daughter of Franklin Collier and Basye, both natives of Bourbon County. She died on January 28, 1872. Mr. Herndon has one son, John F., at home and unmarried, and two daughters: Bettie L., wife of Eugene Barns, of Georgetown, Ky., and Mary, wife of John R. Cooper.
