"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 419-420. Used by permission. [Daviess] JOHN LAFAYETTE WALDROP, JR.: This young minister of the Gospel was born at Etawah, Tennessee, on September 8, 1911, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Waldrop Sr., of Owensboro, Ky. His father was an engineer for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company and is now retired. Our young brother was converted in the year 1920 and became a member of the Third Baptist Church of Owensboro, Kentucky, being baptized by Rev. John S. Wray. He was licensed to preach by the Buena Vista Church, Owensboro, Kentucky, in the year 1934 and was ordained on January 7, 1935, at the same Church by a presbytery composed of Revs. Leslie S. Williams, Claude Bowen, J. Alton Morris, W. S. Coakley, E. H. McElroy, B. F. Waite, J. B. Coleman, and A. F. Cagle. His first pastorate was at the Basin Church which he served in the year 1937. He also served the Karn's Grove Church for one and one-half years in 1937 and 1938; and the Centertown Church, Ohio County, in 1938. In February, 1939, he accepted the care of the Seven Hills Baptist Church, Owensboro, Kentucky, and remained here until October, 1941. During the almost three years of his pastorate at the last mentioned Church considerable progress was made. Over 200 members were added to the membership by letter and baptism. In the spring of 1940 the Church began plans to erect a new building and a building fund was started. The sum of $3,300.00 was raised by the time he retired from the pastorate at Seven Hills. The Church also purchased a location at the corner of Prince Avenue and Eighteenth Street for the new Church. Every phase of the Church life manifested a growth during his pastorate. After serving for two years as Associate Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Columbus, Georgia, he recently accepted the call of the West Side Baptist Church, Atlanta, Georgia. Brother Waldrop is a graduate of the Owensboro Senior High School and Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tennessee. He also holds a degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. On August 1, 1939, our subject married Miss Marguerite Ivey, the daughter of Mr. R W. Ivey of Milledgeville, Georgia. She is a sister of the wife of Dr. Leslie S. Williams, one time pastor of the Buena Vista Baptist Church. She is a college graduate holding the B.S. Degree in General Science and for a period of four years taught in a high school. She has been a Christian since the age of thirteen and is a most capable teacher and pastor's wife and possesses a challenging and lovable character. We predict for them an increased usefulness in the Master's vineyard. They have one child, a girl.
