"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone, Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 442-443. Used by permission. [Daviess] MRS. PETER SMITH: Mrs. Lizzie Ford Smith was born in Shelby County, Kentucky, on September 30, 1861, and was the daughter of Younger and Mary White Ford. She became a Christian in early life and united with the First Baptist Church, Owensboro, Kentucky. She remained a member of this Church until her death and no Church ever had a more devoted member than she. She attended the public schools in Owensboro and also Georgetown College, Georgetown, Kentucky. She married Mr. Peter Smith, a prominent tobacconist in Owensboro for many years, in the year 1880, and Rev. T. C. Stackhouse, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated at the wedding ceremony. Three children blessed this union, one son and two daughters. Mrs. Smith served as a Sunday School teacher in the First Baptist Church for many years. For several years she taught a woman's class but her main interest was centered upon a class of young men. She was especially interested in the young men who entered the ministry, this interest being shown in numerous ways. She took a peculiar interest in Rev. E. N. Perry, one-time pastor of the Buena Vista Church and also a former Moderator of this Association, while he attended school at Bethel College, Russellville, Kentucky. At one time she served as President of the Kentucky W. M. U. and also served for several years as the Superintendent of the Daviess-McLean W. M. U. The Associational work advanced to a great degree as a result of her patient and devoted leadership. For a number of years before her death she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. M. Coffman, at 2038 Frederica Street, in Owensboro. She departed this life on April 14, 1935. The Association and the First Baptist Church sustained a great loss in the death of this devoted and consecrated woman.
