Used by permission. [Daviess] BRAXTON BRAGG SAWYER, A.B., Th.M.: This young and promising preacher of the Gospel was born in Hanceville, Alabama, on July 13, 1911, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Sawyer. He was converted under the preaching of Rev. Russell Duffer and was baptized into the fellowship of the Hoxie Baptist Church, Hoxie, Arkansas, in June, 1933. On July 31, 1933, he preached his first sermon in the Arbor Grove Church, near Hoxie, Arkansas, as he had felt the call to preach immediately after his conversion. By this same Church he was licensed to preach. On April 15, 1934, he was ordained to the ministry by the Arbor Grove Church with Revs. G. L. Richardson, C. N. Glover, and J. T. Ashcraft serving as the presbytery. Bro. Sawyer graduated from High School in 1933 and in 1939 received the A.B. Degree from Ouachita Baptist College, Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He entered the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in the fall of 1939 and received the Master of Theology Degree from that institution in May, 1942. From first to last he has served the following Churches: Harmony Arbor Grove, Mt. Pisgah, Truman, Cash, Fisher, and Pleasant Grove, all in Arkansas. Karn's Grove, Maceo, Yellow Creek, South Hampton, Dawson, all in Daviess County, Kentucky. Since about June, 1942, he has been pastor of the First Church of Pulaski, Virginia. Miss Della Frances Bell, a member of the Dawson Church, has been serving as Secretary to Bro. Sawyer for about one year. He preached the annual sermons before the Mt. Zion Association in Arkansas and the Daviess-McLean Association in Kentucky in 1936 and 1940 respectively. Revs. Hugh Cantrell, Gordon Oliver, and J. C. Wright have all been ordained under his ministry. He was married to Miss Ruth Coker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Coker of Harrisburg, Arkansas, on December 11, 1935. They have one child, Joy Ann Sawyer. Mrs. Sawyer has been a constant help and inspiration to her husband in his ministry. Bro. Sawyer has been very successful in the work of evangelism and over 150 people have professed faith in Christ under his ministry and he has baptized over 600 into the fellowship of Baptist Churches.
