"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 411-412. Used by permission. [Daviess] LAWRENCE CLEO ROBERTS: L. C. Roberts has gained a warm place in the hearts of Daviess-McLean Baptists and is one of our leading young preachers. He was born in Bowling Green, Warren County, Kentucky, on April 11, 1908, and is the son of Lawrence O. and the late Ella Jackson Roberts. His education was the best and he is a graduate of Bowling Green High School and has an A.B. Degree from Western State Teachers College. For four years he taught school in the Junior High department of the Bristow Consolidated School, near Bowling Green, Kentucky. Brother Roberts was licensed by the Fifth Street Baptist Church of Bowling Green in the year 1933. He became the Associate Pastor of the First Church in Bowling Green on June 1, 1934, and served in this capacity until May 1, 1941, when he accepted a similar position with the First Church of Owensboro, Kentucky. While serving the First Church he was instrumental in organizing and beginning the work at the Crabtree Avenue Mission and preached there every Sunday. After the resignation of Rev. B. E. Waite from the pastorate of the Hall Street Church he was unanimously elected to become their pastor. He entered into this work on November 1, 1942, and is the present incumbent at that Church. His ordination was called for by the Hall Street Church and on October 16, 1942, Revs. Robert E. Humpreys, J. O. Williams, W. S. Coakley, D. Arthur Dailey, W. H. Rone, W. G. Potts, L. M. Winstead, and deacons from sister Churches, met with the First Church and set him apart to the work of the ministry. Dr. J. O. Williams of the Sunday School Board preached a very effective ordination sermon. Since coming to this Association Brother Roberts has served on the Baptist Hour Committee and has served as a member of the Executive Mission Board. He preached the doctrinal sermon before the Association in 1942. While connected with the First Church in Bowling Green he served as the clerk of the Warren County Association in 1934-1935 and again in 1937-1940. At the annual meetings of the State Baptist Training Union Convention he has been elected as President for the years 1941 1942, and 1943. This is a very distinct honor in itself. Our brother married Miss Lorene Cline, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Cline, on June 18, 1940. They have no children. She is a faithful helpmate to her husband and a valuable asset to his ministry. Brother Roberts, in a very short time, has made a great impression on the people of the Hall Street Church and the future looks bright and inspiring. His preaching is to the point and very forceful. No one has any difficulty in finding out the sincerity of his heart in regard to his beliefs about the teachings of the Scriptures. It can readily be said that L. C. Roberts is a Baptist.
