"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone, Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky. Used by permission. p. 276-277. Daviess B. B. RAFFERTY: It is to be regretted that few particulars have been found in regard to this brother's life. He was ordained at the request of Mt. Liberty Church by the Pleasant Grove Church in July, 1842, and on several occasions he served the church as pastor in addition to the services of the regular pastor. In 1844 and again in 1855 he served in this capacity besides filling the pulpit on many other occasions. He assisted in the organization of Fredonia Baptist Church, located in the Bon Harbor Hill section of Daviess County, in August, 1842, and probably supplied this church with preaching during her brief history. The first meeting house occupied by the Pleasant Grove Church was built on his farm. The church, years later, moved to its present location. Bro. Rafferty succeeded the aged pioneer preacher, Thomas Downs, as pastor of Mt. Liberty, in July, 1842, immediately after his ordination. He served this church for one and one- half years and resigned. He accepted the care of the Brushy Fork Church in August, 1851, and served one year. He again accepted the church in September, 1855, and remained until November, 1856. During his last pastorate there the church moved from McLean County to Daviess County, a distance of about three miles, but nearer to Brushy Fork Creek for which the church was named. Bro. Rafferty was one of a rare type of ministers who would labor in the cause of Christ whether he received any pay for it or not, and in nearly every instance he would keep a few dollars and return the balance to the church. Truly a sacrificial spirit was exhibited by this man of God, something that is almost lost in the modern day ministry. His death occurred about the year 1877 or 1878 near Hayden's Bridge on Panther Creek. Thus he must have been born about the year 1800.
