[Daviess] WILLIAM GUTHRIE POTTS: This minister of the Gospel was born in Shelby County, Kentucky at Todd's Point, on July 2, 1887, and is the son of Jesse P. and Mary Carter Potts. He was reared on a farm and followed that occupation for several years. He was converted at Mt. Pleasant Church, Shelby County, Kentucky, in October, 1900, and was baptized into the fellowship of the Church by Rev. Walter Ellis Powers, the famous Kentucky Baptist Pastor and preacher. Rev. Phillip Jenkins was aiding the pastor in a series of evangelistic services at the time. Our brother attended the common schools at hand and took some high school courses. He received the B.O. and B.L. Degrees from Hall-Moody Institute, Martin, Tennessee, and also received the Th.G. Degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. He was licensed to preach by his home Church in March, 1910 and was ordained by the same Church on September 4, 1911, with Elders W. E. Powers, E. N. Johnson, J. T. Hoskin, and V. Vanarsdale serving as the council of ordination. He has served the following Churches sice [sic] his ordination: Salem, Jeanette, Tenn., March-August, 1912; Harris, Harris Station, Tenn., 1913; Macedonia, Trenton, Tenn., April-October, 1913; Acting Pastor of Union City Church, Union City, Tenn., January-May, 1914; Supply Pastor Obion, Tenn., June-August, 1914; Pleasant Grove, Shepherdsville, Ky., 1915-1917; Hebbardsville, Ky., 1915-1917; Locust, Carrollton, Ky., 1915-1918; Price Hill, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1918-1919; Union and Gun Powder, near Union, Ky., 1919-1920; Irvine, Ky., 1920-1924; Lebanon Junction, Ky. 1924-1930, Horse Cave, Ky., 1930-1933; and Whitesville, Ky., since January, 1934. He is now in his eleventh year at the Whitesville Church. He has served as the Moderator of Nelson Association for three years. He has preached the annual sermon before the Boone's Creek, Nelson, Liberty, and Daviess-McLean Associations. He has served as a member of the Mission Boards of the North Bend, Boone's Creek, Nelson, Liberty, and Daviess-McLean Associations. He was a member of the State Mission Board for three years and served on the Executive Committee during that time. While at Lebanon Junction a new house of worship was erected. The Church membership doubled while he served at Irvine and two new Churches were constituted; Calvary, West Irvine, and Williams Memorial at Ravenna. Rev. E. C. Masden was licensed to preach while he pastored at Lebanon Junction. Rev. W. F. McGibney was converted under his ministry at Mt. Hebron, Owen County, Kentucky, where he was helping the pastor in a revival. Rev. H. E. Hewlett was also converted under his ministry. Our brother married Miss Zillah Barnes on November 29, 1917. They have one daughter, Evangeline. Mrs. Potts has been a very active worker in the Churches and the Associations where her husband has labored, especially among the women. Her sketch is in the history. She is a good helpmate for her husband. Our subject has now been in the ministry for over thirty-two years and has worked faithfully and well. He attended the Baptist World Alliance in Toronto, Canada, in the year 1928. He preached the annual sermon before the Association in 1936.
