"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 471-472. Used by permission. [Daviess] DEACON N. M. NEWMAN: The subject of this sketch was born in Breckenridge [sic] County, Kentucky, on February 27, 1834. His father, James H. Newman, was born in Prince William County, Virginia, and came to Kentucky in 1827. His mother was Miss Adline Maxey of Hawesville, Kentucky. Nathaniel M. Newman lived with his parents until he reached the age of nineteen. He married Miss Sarah F. Haynes on September 22, 1858. For a number of years after his marriage he followed the occupation of farming. He later taught school only to go back to the farm in a short time. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Newman. Mrs. Newman died in 1868 and in the year 1869 he married Miss Mattie Haynes, a sister of his first wife. She, too, died in 1876, leaving two children. Mr. Newman married the third time in 1878, this time to Mrs. Kate L. Cheatham. In August, 1862, Mr. Newman enlisted in Company H., Tenth Kentucky Cavalry (Confederate), and was elected Second Lieutenant. He served six months and on account of failing eyesight and a spinal infection returned home. He was nearly blind for three years. For a considerable length of time he served as Justice of the Peace. He was probably a charter member of the Birk City Baptist Church (Stanley) and was for many years a deacon. As to when he became a Christian we are not informed. He died in the year 1916 after having served the Stanley Church in the office of deacon for about forty years. He also served as the Church Clerk from 1883 to 1900 and again from 1908 to 1916, the year of his death. In the meantime his face was a familiar sight at each annual gathering of the Association for many years. He left a good record behind him.
