[Daviess] SAMUEL PORTER MARTIN: This honored and beloved minister of Jesus Christ was born in Sulphur, Henry County, Kentucky, on April 26, 1878, and is the son of Thomas D. and Anna Morris Martin. He was converted at the age of eight but did not unite with any Church until a few years later when he was baptized into the fellowship of the 22nd and Walnut Street Baptist Church, in Louisville, Kentucky, by Dr. J. G. Bow. He was licensed by the Franklin Street Church, Louisville, Kentucky, in April, 1901, and was ordained on May 3, 1903, by the same Church, with Revs. W. E. Foster, W. W. Hamilton, J. G. Bow, and J. P. Jenkins serving as the council of ordination. Our subject attended the public schools at Eminence, Kentucky, and also Eminence College. He studied several subjects in the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, at Louisville, Kentucky. His studious and consecrated life have enabled him to be recognized as one of the leading pastors in the State of Kentucky. Since entering the ministry our brother has been pastor of the following Churches: Shepherdsville, Kentucky, 1903-1908; Lebanon, Tennessee, 1911-1913, and also 1929-1931; Third Church, Owensboro, Kentucky, 1913-1919; Middlesboro, Kentucky, 1920-1924; Kingsport, Tennessee, 1925-1927; Newport, Kentucky, 1927; Walnut Street, Owensboro, Kentucky, 1928-1929; Winter Park, Florida, 1931-1935; Murray First, Murray, Kentucky, since 1936. He served as an evangelist of the State Mission Board in the years 1919-1920. During his connection with the Third and Walnut Street Churches, Owensboro, Kentucky, he preached the annual sermon before the Association in 1916. He has also served on the Executive Board of Kentucky Baptists on two different occasions, 1903 to 1908, and again in 1913-1919. He served as Assistant Moderator of the General Association in 1937. He married Miss Laura Belle Seibert of Louisville, Kentucky, in 1901. They have one son and one daughter. Both Brother Martin and his wife are held in high esteem by many friends in Owensboro and elsewhere.
