KIRK was born in Augusta County, Va., Sept. 17, 1814. His father was James Kirk, born in Virginia. He was Captain in the war of 1812. He married Jane G. Powell. They had a family of eight children. John L. was the third child, and oldest of the four now living. He was but six years old when he came, in 1820, to Daviess County, Ky. His father first settled on the farm now owned by C. D. Jackson. John L. was but thirteen when his father died. He lived with his mother until eighteen, when he left the farm in charge of his brothers. He then worked for different parties until his marriage to Susan Cottrell, in January, 1835. She was born in Shelby County, Ky., and was a daughter of Reuben and Sarah (Pattmon) Cottrell. After his marriage Mr. Kirk settled in the timber, where now is his fine farm in Masonville Precinct. He and wife had six children, four living--Sarah J., born June, 1837, is the wife of Luther J. Cottrell, of Owensboro; Thomas P., born August, 1839, married a Miss Taylor, who died, and he then married Susan Barnhill, and resides in Boston Precinct; Melissa, born in 1841, is the wife of John Chapman, of Owensboro; Menerva P., born in 1843, is the wife of Hiram Bristow; and John, born in 1851, died Dec. 15, 1874. The mother died June 18, 1853. Mr. Kirk married Mrs. Sarah A. Hemingway, in November, 1854. She was born in Charleston, Ind., Dec. 23, 1823, and was a daughter of Enoch and Delila (Whittaker) Stout. Mrs. Kirk first married Hiram Rager, and they had one son, William T. Rager, born April 4, 1843. Mr. Rager died in 1844. She then married Daniel Hemingway. They had one daughter, Mildren, now Mrs. B. Chapman. Mr. and Mrs. Kirk have had six children--Mary A., born Jan. 18, 1855, now Mrs. Samuel Taylor; Richard W., born Nov. 25, 1857; Emily B., born Oct. 20, 1859; James C., born Oct. 20, 1862, and Benjamin F., born Sept. 18, 1863. Mr. and Mrs. Kirk are both members of the Bethabara Baptist church. He has been Deacon eighteen years. Mr. Kirk owns a fine farm of 169 acres, 100 under cultivation. In politics he has always been a Democrat.
