Used by permission. [Daviess] DEACON REUBEN MILLER HOLLAND: R. Miller Holland has been one of the most outstanding lawyers of Owensboro for the past thirty-three years. He was born in Whitesville, Daviess County, Kentucky, on June 17, 1887, and is the son of W. M. F. and Nancy Miller Holland. He attended the public schools of Daviess County and received the A.B. Degree from the University of Kentucky. He also received the Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Virginia. He was converted at the age of ten and united with the Old Panther Creek Church in Ohio County, being baptized by Rev. B. F. Jenkins. He has held membership with the Whitesville and the Third Baptist Churches also, a member of the latter for the past thirty- three years. He was ordained a deacon at the Third Baptist Church in about the year 1913 and has served on the Board of Deacons the majority of the time since then. He served this Church as Clerk in the years 1911-1914, as Sunday School Superintendent for some time and as a teacher in the Sunday School for the past twenty-five years. He served as the assistant Moderator of the Association in 1928-1929 and as the Moderator in 1930-1931. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Old Ministers' Aid Society for the past ten yens [sic] and is now serving as President of that Board. He began the practice of law in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1910. He served in the Field Artillery Central Officers' Training School during World War I. He was a member of the Board of Education of the City of Owensboro in the years 1923-1927 and was Owensboro City Attorney in the years 1927-1930. He has also served as a director and general counsel for the Owensboro Building and Loan Association and as Director and Vice-President of the Southern Industrial Loan Corporation. In the years 1934-1939 he served as a Trustee of the University of Kentucky. Mr. Holland married Miss Christina Pence of Lexington, Kentucky, on October 3, 1911. They have one son and one daughter. Two children are dead. Mr. Holland has been an outstanding leader in the religious and civic life of the City of Owensboro and maintains a host of friends gained through the years.
