"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 308-309. Used by permission. [Daviess] ARCHER G. DAVIS: "Uncle Archie" Davis, as he was known by those who knew him intimately, was born in Daviess County, Ky., on October 13, 1834. He came from an excellent family. The opportunities for obtaining an education were not favorable to him but he toiled hard and attained. He was of Methodist persuasion and affiliated with that denomination early in life. He later married Charlotte Owen, a confirmed Baptist. By open discussion and study of the Bible with his brother-in-law, Lattney Owen, he was completely persuaded of the Scripturalness [sic] of the Baptist Faith. He united with the Oak Grove Baptist Church (Utica) and was baptized by the sainted J. M. Peay, in January, 1861. Oak Grove Church licensed him to preach the Gospel and on September 15, 1866, he was ordained to the full work of the ministry by Elders J S. Coleman, J. C. Maple, J. M. Peay, D. S. Colgan, Frederick Tanner, D. E. Yeiser, and L. C. Tichenor. He served his mother church, Oak Grove, as pastor on two different occasions, 1868-1869 and 1878-1881. He held membership with the Oak Grove Church until his death forty-five years later and often served as Moderator of the Church and messenger to the Association. He served as pastor of Chestnut Grove from its organization in 1868 to 1871 and again in 1876. He served South Carrollton in 1873; Woodward's Valley 1879-1881; West Providence 1893-1896. From 1897 to the time of his death he held no pastorates. Although his pastorates were few and in a small territory his ability in the Scriptures was recognized everywhere he went. He was a clear, strong, forcible reasoner [sic] and gave masterly discourses. He served the Association as missionary on several occasions, the Association asking Oak Grove Church to ordain him for that purpose. For some years he gave his time and labor without charge to the Association. For twenty-three years, from 1870 through 1892 he served this Association as clerk. In this time he made a record that is imperishable, and to him do we owe much for the accuracy of the recording of the proceedings of this body during those growing years. "Uncle Archie" was greatly loved and honored by all who knew him as a sincere, honest, and devout Christian. He was a tower of strength in the work of the Lord. A large concourse of friends followed his remains to the Utica cemetery where an imposing monument marks his last resting place. He died at the age of sixty-nine on March 20, 1904. Bro. Davis' family consisted of his wife and five children, two boys and three girls. One girl is still living in Louisville, Ky.
