"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 306-308. Used by permission. [Daviess] METCALF JACKSON COX: Elder M. J. Cox was born near Buford, Ohio County, Kentucky, on March 12, 1876. He was the son of William Maddra and Martha Frances Ellis Cox. He was baptized into the fellowship of the Mt. Carmel Church at the age of twelve by Elder B. F. Jenkins. After completing the grade schools in his native county he attended La Rue College, which was probably at Bowling Green, Kentucky. For a number of years he taught school. At one time he entered the political field and ran for State Representative from Ohio County. He lost by a small number of votes. In the year 1903 he was united in marriage to Miss Lillian Alexander, the daughter of B. F. and Ann Mary Alexander. To this union was born five children. His untimely death, on July 3, 1914, at the age of thirty-eight, left her a widow with tremendous responsibilities. Sometime about the year 1908 Bro. Cox was ordained to the ministry but we have been unable to find out anything concerning this event. His first pastorates were at Hopewell in Daviess County, in 1908-1909; Zion in Ohio County in 1909; and Deanefield in Ohio County in 1908-1910. He then served the following churches in Daviess County: Dawson, 1909-1911; Stanley, 1911-1914 ; Glenville, 1910-1911; South Hampton, 1911-1912; Brushy Fork, 1912-1913; Sorgho, 1912-1914; and Pleasant Grove, 1914. For some time after he entered the ministry he attended the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. Brother Cox preached the Annual Sermon before the Association in 1909 and again in 1913. His untimely death in the prime of life occurred at the Owensboro City Hospital after a lingering illness of typhoid fever. His funeral was preached from the Third Baptist Church in Owensboro, Kentucky, by the pastor, Bro. Sam P. Martin. His body was laid to rest in the Elmwood Cemetery where an imposing monument greets the eye of all who chance to pass that way. Even though his ministry was brief it was successful in the building up of the churches to which he ministered.
