"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 297-298. Used by permission. [Daviess] CRAWFORD CHARLES CHAPLIN: Not many particulars have been found concerning the life of this useful minister of the Gospel. His birth occurred in Danville, Virginia, on September 22, 1831. He received his education at Richmond College, in Richmond, Virginia. His conversion took place in the year 1853, and in December, 1856, he was ordained to the ministry by the Sandy Creek Church, in his native state. The Church at Danville, Virginia immediately called him as her pastor. Here he remained until June, 1870, when he resigned to accept the care of the First Baptist Church in Owensboro, Kentucky. While serving as pastor of the Church here at Owensboro he preached the Annual Sermon before the Association in 1871. After a ministry of about three years here he went to the First Church in Paducah, Kentucky. In January, 1877, he again changed his place of labor, going this time to the First Church in Austin, Texas. After a successful pastorate of ten years he went to Brenham, Texas, in the spring of 1880, where he ended his earthly labors. There he died, on November 3, 1884. Besides serving in the pastorate he also served as Chaplain of the Texas Senate for several years, and as President of the Texas Baptist Convention from 1881 until his death. All these relations he filled with great honor to himself, and was preeminently useful to each and all of them. It is estimated that more than four thousand persons were converted under his ministry, and nearly three thousand added to the fellowship of Baptist Churches.
