GEORGE WASHINGTON WITHROW was born 8 May 1861 in Carter County, Ky to
ALFRED HARVEY and JUDITH ANN (JOBE) WITHROW.  GEORGE married three (3)
times.  The first marriage was to EMMA ELIZABETH SMITH on 9 Sept 1882 in
Carter County.  Emma was born about 1864 to GEORGE WASHINGTON SMITH and
CARILDA MOORE.  EMMA died in 1889 at Owensville, Bath County, Ky and is
buried at the Jackson Cemetery.  She and GEORGE had three (3) children: 

1. ALFRED AVERY was born 27 Dec 1884 and he married WILLIE TENSLEY on 29
Nov 1903.  ALFRED died 15 Oct 1981.
2. MOSE was born about 1886 and married ELIZABETH PETRY on 23 July 1908.
MOSE died 13 Sept 1954.
3. CARILDA JANE was born 16 April 1888 and married GEORGE WETZEL CARICO
on 25 Dec 1908.  CARILDA died 23 May 1954.

After the death of EMMA, GEORGE married ELVIA (ELVA) WELLS on 9 Sept
1891.  ELVA was born in August 1874 and was the daughter of BENJAMIN and 
SARAH (ROBINSON) WELLS.  ELVA died 3 June 1906 at Huntington, Cabell 
County, West Virginia. GEORGE died 26 Sept 1945. ELVA and GEORGE had 
four (4) children:
1. RUSSELL (information below)
2. LYDIA was born 11 Sept 1894 and married RUSSELL EARSKIN on 19 May
1914.  Lydia died 25 Dec 1943.
3. OLIVER CLARENCE was born 28 Aug 1897 and married MARY ELIZABETH THOMAS
on 17 Jan 1917.  Oliver died 14 March 1966.
4. BENJAMIN TAYLOR was born 8 May 1900 and married NELLIE GEARHEART on 21
March 1925.  BENJAMIN died 5 June 1978.

After the death of ELVA, GEORGE married MARY WILLIAMS.

RUSSELL was born 10 Dec 1892. RUSSELL married three (3) times . The
first marriage was to MINNIE WHITE in 1912 in Carter County, the second
was to VIRGIE in Boyd County and the third was to LAURA LILLIAN YATES 
on 16 June 1943 in Boyd County.  LAURA was born 21 May 1916 in Carter 
County to JOHN and NORA ALICE (GOLLIHUE) YATES.  LAURA died 12 July 1991 
in Yakima, Washington.  RUSSELL died 27 August 1962 in Richmond, Virginia. 
RUSSELL and LAURA had six (6) children:

1. DOUGLAS EUGENE was born 12 May 1942.
2. JAMES RUSSELL was born 26 April 1944.
3. CHARLES RAYMOND was born 11 May 1945.
4. BETTY SUE was born 4 June 1947.
5. RONALD (stillborn)
6. JOHNNY DALE was born 16 Feb 1950.

RUSSELL listed his occupation as a laborer on his 1914 and 1917 National
Guard records, and on his WWI medical records he listed his occupation as
a carpenter.  His post war occupation and future address was listed as a
miner.  He worked for the B & O Railroad in 1917 and on his marriage
record to LAURA he worked in a poolroom.  He also worked as a cook.

RUSSELL joined the West Virginia National Guard, and was in from 1912 -
1915. He re-enlisted in 1915 and was in till 1917.  He mustered into
active federal service 1 July 1916, as a private in Ravenswood, New
Jersey. He was in Company  8, 2nd Infantry, and mustered out as a
wagoneer on 24 March 1917.  He was discharged on 3 April 1917.  He was in
regular army from 1918 - 1920. He served in the Allied Expeditionary
Forces in Europe with Co K, 59th Infantry Regiment.  He fought in three
major battles: Meuse-Argonne, St Mihiel and Aisne-Marne - three of the
bloodiest battles in WWI.  He got mustard gassed on 19 July 1918, and on 
5 Oct 1918 he got mustard gassed and shot by a machine gun.  He laid in a
fox hole for three days in Argonne, France, waiting for his company to
reach him.

The injury was to his right upper extremities and back. The injury caused
the right arm and hand to claw and the back to hunch.  The Army Medical
records say that the wounds were easily repairable, but they never were.
He remained in the hospital for two (2) years, and was discharged on 31
Jan 1920 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.  I fought with the army for two (2)
years to get the medals that were due him and in 1992, I received a
Purple Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, WWI Victory Medal and a silver
Victory Button.  It would have been better if these medals had been
awarded to him while he was alive.

RUSSELL developed cataracts on his eyes and was blind for years.  The
entire family was moved to Staunton, Virginia where LAURA worked at the
Western State Hospital.  RUSSELL had the cataracts removed from his eyes
and could see for a short time then it was discovered he had stomach
cancer.  He died at the VA Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
