Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B Carter County E.B. WILHOIT, was born in Carter County, Ky., September 19, 1842, and is a son of James A. and Matilda A. (Boggs) Wilhoit. James A. Wilhoit was born in Madison County, Va., in 1816. When a child he moved to Montgomery County, Ky., with his parents. He was a practical stone-cutter and was also engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was regarded by all who knew him as a strictly moral and religious man, and for sixteen years was a justice of the peace in Carter County; his death occurred in 1873, he having been for many years a consistent member and preacher of the Baptist Church. He was a son of John and Nancy (Prince) Wilhoit. John Wilhoit, also a native of Madison County, Va., was a merchant and farmer by occupation, and died in Bath County, Ky. His father was Phillip Wilhoit, a native of South Carolina; the latter was son of Adam, a native of Germany. Mrs. Matilda A. Wilhoit was born in Virginia, a daughter of James Boggs, also a native of Virginia; the latter was a son of John Boggs. E.B. Wilhoit was educated at the common schools and at the Seminary, Mount Sterling, Ky., and Grayson, Ky., in 1856-57. In 1861 he enlisted in the Federal army, Company I, Twenty-second Kentucky Infantry, and served until the close of the war. He read law and was admitted to the bar in 1866. July 30, 1867, he married Miss Alice Frizell (daughter of Major Frizell), who died in 1853, leaving three children, viz: A.F., Edward and Enchetel B. She was a strict member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for many years before her death. September 19, 1882, Mr. Wilhoit married Anna Blackburn, of Atlanta, Ga., a highly educated and accomplished lady, daughter of Dr. J.C.C. Blackburn, of Atlanta, and a second cousin to Joe C.S. Blackburn, the present United States Senator from Kentucky. Two children have blessed this union, viz: Maria and Inez. Mrs. Wilhoit is a member of the Episcopal Church. Mr. Wilhoit is a Royal Arch Mason, has passed all the chairs in I.O.O.F., and has been Worshipful Master of his Lodge, and also represented the same in the Grand Lodge. Was Aid-de-Camp on Staff of Governor Blackburn for four years, and was county attorney of Carter County in 1873. He is an able lawyer and a man of mark in his community.
