"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 415-416. Used by permission. [Caldwell] OZORA M. SHULTZ, SR.: O. M. Shultz is perhaps one of the strongest doctrinal preachers now living who has served Churches in this Association. He was born in Beaver Dam, Ohio County, Kentucky, on October 22, 1864, the son of Sally Ann Hocker and Matthew N. Shultz. His educational advantages were good and he soon acquired the A.B. Degree from Hartford College, Hartford, Kentucky. He also attended the University of Indiana, at Bloomington, for same time. In the years 1888-1889 he taught country school and in the years 1890-1891 he served as Principal of the Beaver Dam Graded Schools. In the years 1892-1897 he served as Secretary and Professor of Mathematics of Hartford College, Hartford, Kentucky. In 1897-1899 he served as Vice President of West Kentucky College at South Carrollton, Kentucky, and held the same position with the Hartford College from 1899 to 1904. In the year 1905 he served as an agent for the American Book Company. Our brother was married to Miss Katie Coombs of Hartford, Kentucky, on August 22, 1894. Three sons and two daughters blessed this union. We are not informed as to the time of his conversion or who baptized him. We presume that his membership was with the Beaver Dam Church until he moved to Hartford, Kentucky. He was ordained to the ministry by the Hartford Baptist Church on July 29, 1906. Since that time he has served the following Churches: Mt. Carmel, Ohio County, 1906-1909; Oak Grove (Utica), Daviess County, 1906-1914; Livermore, McLean County, 1909-1915; Pleasant Grove, Daviess County, 1914-1915; Oakland and Plano, Warren County, 1915-1917; Auburn, Logan County, 1917-1919; Sugar Grove and Bethabara, Daviess County, 1919-1921; Princeton First, Caldwell County, 1921-1930. Ill health forced him to resign from the last mentioned pastorate. After about one year of rest he became head of the Bible Department of Hazard Institute. This was in conection [sic] with his pastorate of the Broadway Church at Hazard, Kentucky, a position he occupied from August, 1931, to January, 1934. He served the First Chuurch [sic] at Jenkins, Kentucky, in 1934-1937. Since that time he has served some country Churches near Princeton, Kentucky. Even though he is nearing his seventy-ninth year he is still carrying on in the work of the Lord. Bro. Shultz served as Moderator of the Little River Association in 1922-1924. He was largely instrumental in the founding of the Caldwell County Association and served as the first Moderator of that new fraternity from 1924 to 1931. He served as Assistant Moderator of the General Association of Kentucky Baptists in 1929 and 1930 and as Moderator in 1930 and 1931. He has also served on the State Mission Board, the Board of Managers of the Western Recorder, and numerous other committees in various Associations, local, state, and in the Southern Baptist Convention. He is the author of the following tracts: "The Mission of The Baptists," "Tracing Baptists Through History," "Doctrines of Baptists," "The True Churches and Their True Mission," "The Attitude of Baptists Toward Church Union," and many other articles for denominational papers. No one has any difficulty in readily learning of the fact that O. M. Shultz is a Baptist. In his convictions he is uncompromising. He is a student of the old school of Coleman, Jenkins, Casebier, Maddox, Bruner, and other stalwarts of the Baptist faith in the Green River country. He has served his generation well. Baptist life has been enriched by the life of Ozora M. Shultz.
