"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 380-381. Used by permission. [Breckinridge] ARTHUR N. COUCH, D.D.: The subject of this sketch is the son of the late Rev. W. J. and Emelyne Couch and was born in Lincoln County, Tennessee, on April 13, 1868. He was born again in October, 1878, and was baptized into the fellowship of the Baptist Church at New Market, Alabama, by his father. Our brother attended school a few months each year in his youth. He later attended school at Eagleville, Tennessee, and at Jackson University. In the year 1896 he graduated from Bethel College, Russellville, Kentucky. For some time he taught school in Tennessee and Kentucky. In the year 1885 the Trenton Baptist Church, Trenton, Kentucky, licensed him to preach the Gospel. This same Church called for his ordination in February, 1893, and the same was done by a presbytery composed of Dr. J. M. Phillips, and Revs. A. B. Cabanniss, T. C. McCall, and W. J. Couch. Since his ordination up until his retirement from the pastorate he served the following Churches: Trenton, Ky.; Armadeggon [sic], Ky.; Ringgold and Dixon, Tennessee; Forrest City, Arkansas; Haynesville and Calquit, Louisiana; Center, Texas; Fordsville, Ohio County, Ky.: Glenville, Sugar Grove, Pleasant Grove, Pleasant Ridge, Seven Hills, Calhoun, Sacramento, Yellow Creek, and Maceo, in Daviess and McLean Counties, Kentucky; Vandalia, Missouri; Cloverport, Kentucky; Bardwell, Ky., Bloomfield, La Mont, and La Beier, in Missouri. His pastorates in this Association covered the period from 1906 to 1915 with the exception of two years in Vandalia, Missouri. The Peoples National University of Georgia honored him with the degree of D.D. In the years 1911 and 1912 he served as Moderator of this Association. He served as clerk and assistant clerk in 1914-1916 and preached the annual sermon before the body in 1914. From 1909 to 1920 he was secretary and treasurer of the Baptist Ministers' Aid Society of Kentucky. Our brother was successful as an evangelist and numbers of people were led to the Lord under his ministry. He was also successful in his pastoral work as the Churches which he served made considerable progress under his ministry. Rev. M. J. Cox answered the call to preach under his ministry. Because of a nervous breakdown our brother has been unable to preach very much since 1928. Mrs. Couch was formerly Miss Katie J. Smith, the daughter of James F. and Mary Herndon Smith. They were married on June 20 1894. Six children, three girls and three boys, blessed this union. All of them are members of Baptist Churches. Mrs. Gabbert and Mrs. Small are Sunday School teachers and singers of note. Brother Couch is now in his 75th year (1943) and enjoys a reasonable amount of good health. His home is at Cloverport, Ky., and he holds membership in the Baptist Church there. His baptisms number over 1,000 and conversions over 1,500. He is also the author of a pamphlet on Tithing which is now out of print. His preaching has been of the doctrinal and expository type. After an active ministry of thirty-six years he now looks back in loving remembrance over a good work in the Master's cause.
