Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B Bracken County GEORGE DONIPHAN, a son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Ward) Doniphan, was born in Augusta, Ky., January 23, 1861. Joseph Doniphan was a lawyer by profession, and a leading member of the Bracken County bar. He enlisted at the opening of the war in the Sixteenth Kentucky Infantry, where he attained the rank of Colonel. George Doniphan was reared in Bracken County, and was educated at the University of Rochester, at Rochester, N.Y., where he graduated in 1880. He then attended the Cincinnati Law School, where he graduated in 1884 and began his practice in Augusta.
