FAYETTE DUNLAP, M.D., was born March 3, 1855, in Danville, and is a son
of Dr. Richard W. and Sarah (Bailey) Dunlap, who reared four sons and one
daughter, of whom Fayette is the oldest.  Richard W. Dunlap was born in
Lexington, Ky., July 4, 1817.  He was a graduate of Transylvania
University, also from the University of Pennsylvania; was one of the
leading physicians of Kentucky; was a member of the State Medical Society;
was its president in 1879-80; was also a member of the American Medical
Association and president of the State Board of Health.  In 1832 he moved
to Danville, Ky., where he had a large and extended practice.  He died
July 28, 1885.  His father, George Dunlap, was born in Fayette County
January 29, 1789, and was a prominent attorney of Lexington, where he had
accumulated considerable property.  He married Mary Downton, who was born
in Fayette County in 1787, and died July 17, 1843, after which he retired
from active life, and died at Danville June 5, 1851.  He was a son of Col.
William Dunlap, of Augusta County, Va., born in 1751, in Scotland.  He
married Rebecca Robertson, who was born in Augusta County, Va., in 1754.
He immigrated to and was one of the earliest settlers of Fayette County,
Ky.; settled on what is known as "Walnut Hill" farm.  He was a son of
_______ Dunlap, a minister of the Church of England, who was born in
Scotland.  Mrs. Sarah (Bailey) Dunlap was born in Lincoln County June 12,
1830; she was a daughter of Carroll and America (Patton) Bailey, both
born in Lincoln County, he in 1796, she May 12, 1802.  He was a soldier
under Gov. Isaac Shelby in 1812, was captured, but made his escape.
Fayette Dunlap has the equipment he carried during the war.  He was a
civil engineer, served as sheriff and surveyor of his county, and raised
a family of one son and eight daughters.  In 1850 he was thrown from a
horse and killed.  His widow is still living, and in good health.  He was a
son of Elijah Bailey, who married a Miss Sarah Jackman and who was born in
Rockingham County, Va., was an early settler of Lincoln County, and became
a large and extensive farmer.  John Bailey, his father, was born in
Richmond, Va., was an Episcopal minister, served in the Revolution, after
which he received a grant of land in Lincoln County, Ky., on which he
located at the close of the war.  He was a son of Elijah Bailey, of English
parentage.  Dr. Fayette Dunlap was born and reared in Danville, and
graduated from Centre College in 1874; was engaged in civil engineering
for a short time, also as a drug clerk.  In 1876 he commenced the study of
medicine and surgery, graduating from the medical department of the
University of Louisiana in 1879, serving one year in the Charity Hospital
of New Orleans and going through the yellow fever epidemic of 1878; also
received the degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1883, and
progresses with his profession by attending lectures during winter months
when convenient.  He has had excellent success, and established a good
lucrative practice.  He is Democratic in politics.  His brother, W. W.
Dunlap, graduated from West Point.  He entered the Confederate Army; was
lieutenant-colonel of artillery in the army of the khedive of Egypt, from
1868 to 1876, and is now civil engineer in the mining region of Colorado.
