Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887 Boyle Co. OBADIAH BRUMFIELD was born April 1, 1833, on the place where he now resides, twelve and one-half miles west of Danville, Boyle County, on the Lebanon turnpike. He is the son of James Brumfield, who was also born on this place November 5, 1808, but lived some years with his parents in Daviess County, when he returned to Boyle County, where he is still living. He was at one time an extensive farmer, and on the old homestead conducted a large hotel for many years, having an immense patronage from travelers and drovers; he was, financially, a great sufferer by the war, and among other misfortunes sustained a loss of thirty slaves. He is a Union man, and is connected with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He is a son of Obadiah Brumfield, Sr., a native of Washington County, who was born in 1785, and died in 1836, and whose father was James Brumfield of Virginia. His children were William, Richard, James, Robert, Samuel, Obadiah, Sr., and Rachel (Yeager). Obadiah Sr. married Nancy Crow, and their offspring are James, Jr., Ellen (Crumbaugh), Samuel (deceased) and William. James, Jr., married Ruan C. Sherrill (born 1814 in Indiana), and from their union sprang Maria J. (Irvine), Obadiah and Samuel (deceased). November 25, 1867, Obadiah, our subject, was married to Miss Phoebe A., daughter of Gabriel S. and Lucinda (Moss) Caldwell (born November 24, 1843), and to them have been born Annie, Lucy, Ella, Sue, James, Joie and Caldwell. In youth Obadiah attended college one year at Lebanon, Tenn., and graduated at Centre College at Danville. He served five years as surveyor of Boyle County; was postmaster for many years, and was re-elected surveyor in the fall of 1885. He is now engaged in farming and stock raising, having a well arranged and productive farm of 200 acres. His Holstein cattle are of superior grade. He also owns 800 acres of timbered land in the knobs near by. He is an elder in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a member of the Masonic fraternity, and a Democrat. Mrs. Brumfield's father, Gabriel S. Caldwell, was born in 1811. He was a magistrate and member of the court of claims, served several terms as sheriff, and was twice elected to the Legislature as a Whig. He was for many years an elder in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and died May 11, 1885. He married Lucinda Moss (born 1813), and their union was favored by the birth of James, Susan (Fleece), Lucy A. (Wharton), Sallie (Kirk), Mary (Boone), Phoebe A. (Brumfield, John T. (deceased), Parmelia (Smith) and Lucinda (Grinstead).
