Young is a native of Jessamine County, Ky., was born October 5, 1836, and is a son of Dr. Archibald and Eliza (Farrar) Young, natives respectively, of Woodford and Fayette Counties. John Young, the father of Dr. Archibald Young, was born in South Carolina, but was an early settler of Kentucky. He had been a soldier and was a participant in the battle of King's Mountain. Dr. Archibald was of Scotch-Irish descent on the paternal side. His mother was Scotch and named McCollough. Eliza (Farrar) Young, wife of Dr. Archibald Young and mother of Dr. Matthew H. Young, was of English descent on the maternal side, and descended from the ancient house of Mercer. Dr. Archibald studied medicine under the celebrated Dr. Brown of Lexington, Ky., and after a successful career in his profession died in September, 1860, aged seventy years. Dr. Matthew H. Young was reared on a farm near Nicholasville, was educated at Bethel Academy, took his first course of lectures on medicine at Transylvania University, and graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1859. In 1861 he joined the Fourth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, union service as surgeon, and in July, 1864, was captured south of Atlanta on the Cooke raid, but was paroled and subsequently rejoined his regiment. At the close of the war in 1865 he located in the practice of his profession at Ashland, Boyd County, Ky., studied homeopathy and now practices in that school. March 29, 1966, he married Mary Virginia, daughter of R.M. Biggs, (deceased), former president of the Lexington & Big Sandy Railroad Company. The Doctor was for a number of years examiner of applicants for pensions, but resigned some time since on account of ill-health; he is a stock-holder in the Kentucky Iron and Coal Company, is a Freemason, an Odd Fellow, and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
