Johnson is a native of Caroline County, Va., was born October 11, 1830, and is a son of William H. and Matilda (Taylor) Johnson, also natives of Virginia, but of English origin. William H. Johnson was a coach builder by occupation, and his father, William Johnson, was a soldier of the Revolutionary war. John T. Johnson was educated in Lynchburg, Va., and in April, 1862, joined the Thirteenth Virginia Artillery as Lieutenant of Davidson Battery, was promoted in the Captaincy, and served until the surrender of Lee. He then went to Richmond and opened a hotel; in 1881 he came to Kentucky and settled at Ashland, Boyd County, where he engaged in the wholesale and retail liquor business on Front street. In 1862 he married Miss Drucilla Sharp, who was born in Richmond, and who died in 1866, the mother of two children: Mattie and Bessie Marvin. Mr. Johnson is a Freemason and a Democrat.
