Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Boyd County WILLIAM O. HAMPTON was born in Boyd County, Ky., March 25, 1835, and is the second of six sons born to William and Sarah (Buchanan) Hampton, the former a native of Cabell County, Va. (now West Virginia), and the latter a native of Montgomery County, Ky. The grandfather of William O was also named William, and the father of the latter was Dr. Henry Hampton, a surgeon in the United States army. Dr. Henry Hampton was one of two brothers who came from England and settled in Virginia in the colonial days; a cousin, Wade Hampton, settled in South Carolina about the same time, and his grandson, Wade Hampton, became United States Senator from that State. William Hampton, the father of William O., was born in 1808, was a farmer and local Methodist preacher, and in Kentucky held the office of justice of the peace, from 1834 until the adoption of the new constitution. His death occurred July 25, 1887. William Buchanan, father of Mrs. Sarah Hampton, was born in the city of Lancaster, Penn., came to Kentucky and located in Woodford County, but subsequently removed to eastern Kentucky. He was a relation of the late President Buchanan's family, was of English and Scotch-Irish descent, was a farmer and a very pious man. He died at the age of ninety-two years. William O. Hampton has always lived in Boyd County, Ky., and was educated at Marshall College, W.Va., but did not take a thorough course. He began the study of law in 1857, was admitted in the bar in 1859, but relinquished practice at the beginning of the late war. In 1865 he was elected on the Democratic ticket to the combined office of county and circuit clerk of Boyd County, and held the county clerkship about seven years and the circuit clerkship ten years. He then engaged in the lumber trade and in farming, and has also served as deputy sheriff, justice of the peace, and master commissioner and receiver. In May, 1862, he married Miss Mary Ward, of Caster County, daughter of Jackson Ward (deceased), and to this union have been born three children, William J., Sallie and Fannie.
