JOEL TANNER was born near Florence, Boone Co., Ky., November 2, 1807. 
He was the fifth of fourteen children born to Ephraim and Susana 
(House) Tanner.  Ephraim Tanner was born in Virginia.  He came to what 
is now Boone County in 1805, and settled near where Florence is now 
located, on the property now owned by Herman Walker and others, near 
Florence.  Susanna, his wife, was also a native of Virginia.  Both the 
Tanners and Houses were originally from Germany.  Ephraim Tanner was a 
farmer by occupation, but a blacksmith by trade.  Both he and his wife 
died in Boone County.  Our subject was brought up on the farm, and 
received a common-school education.  He settled on his present place 
October 28, 1828, and farmed until 1835.  In early life he was 
afflicted with rheumatism, and was compelled to cease farming, and 
turned his attention to the blacksmith's trade; without any assistance 
he soon became a good blacksmith, and is a natural mechanic.  He 
resides on and owns 100 acres of valuable, well improved land, and in 
1851 built his present brick residence.  February 7, 1828, he married 
Liddie Crigler, a daughter of Jacob and Ellen (Tanner) Crigler, 
originally from Pennsylvania, but early settlers in Boone County.  To 
this union thirteen children were born, in the following order: Enoch, 
Joshua, Susan E., Mary Ann, Corilla H., Malinda C., Amanda E., Julia F.,
Lucy V., Sarah J., Martha L., Rhoda C. and Media R.  Of these eight are 
still living.  Mrs. Tanner died in 1859.  She was a member of the 
Lutheran Church, and her husband has been a member of the same church 
for more than sixty years.  Politically he is a Democrat.
