Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, 1887 Bath County TOLIVER P. YOUNG, a farmer and stock-grower, was born in Bath County, Ky., March 3, 1804. His father, James Young, a native of Virginia, came to Kentucky about 1803 and settled on a farm in Bath County, where he died July 28, 1833. He married Sarah Peters, a native of Virginia, who bore him five children, the subject of this sketch being the second child. Mrs. Sarah Young died in 1862, a member of the Christian Church. The paternal grandfather of Toliver P. Young, a native of Virginia was an early settler of Montgomery County, Ky., and served in the war for Independence, as did also William Peters, maternal grandfather of our subject. The great-grandfather on T.P. Young's mother's side was named John Ashpy; he was a captain under Gen. Washington in the war for Independence. John Young, T.P.'s great-grandfather, was an Englishman; he came to America with Lord Baltimore, and his wife was Miss Kity Bean, of Scotland. The early life of Toliver P. Young was spent on the farm and in clerking. He owns 315 acres of well improved land. February 22, 1831, he married Emily Peters, of Woodford County, Ky., a daughter of James and Mary (Kerr) Peters, of Virginia. Seven children blessed this union, viz: Maria L., Mary, James L., Johnson A., Alex K., Ella B. and one who died in infancy. Mrs. Young died in 1871, a member of the Christian Church. Politically Mr. Young is a Democrat. He served as deputy sheriff of Bath County four years, and in 1841-42 was a member of the Legislature. At one time he was elected captain of the militia, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of a major. He is also a member of the Christian Church and a good citizen.
