Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, 1887 Bath County JAMES WORTH RUTHERFORD, a practicing physician located at Sharpsburg, Bath County, Ky., was born in Owingsville, Bath County, December 26, 1848, and is a son of Hudson and Elizabeth (Hopwood) Rutherford. Hudson Rutherford was born near Nicholasville, Jessamine County, Ky., February 28, 1812. He was a graduate of the Transylvania Medical College, Lexington, Ky., and a prominent physician, having practiced many years in Owingsville and Cynthiana; his name is familiar to almost all of the older citizens of eastern and central Kentucky. He was surgeon of Bragg's division in the Confederate army and served in that capacity until the close of the war. He was a son of James Rutherford, a native of Kentucky of Scotch extraction. Mrs. Elizabeth Rutherford was born in Montgomery County, Ky., a daughter of James and Kizzie (Anderson) Hopwood, native Virginians, who were early settlers of Montgomery County, Ky. Six children were born to Hudson and Elizabeth Rutherford, three sons and three daughters, viz: Binie, Mary, James W., John H., Albert S. and Mollie F. James W. Rutherford was brought up in Owingsville and at the outbreak of the war moved with his father and his family to Georgia, where he joined the Confederate army as Orderly Sergeant of the Fifth Georgia Cadets, serving in that capacity until the close of the war. He then returned to Kentucky and attended school at Cynthiana until 1867, when he commenced the study of medicine, and in 1872 graduated in medicine from the Ohio Medical College, Cincinnati. He then practiced his profession at Cynthiana a short time, when he moved to Ruddel's Mills, Bourbon County, Ky., where he remained until 1875, he then moved to Covington and practiced medicine for two years; locating at Sharpsburg, Bath County, in 1877, where he still remains, enjoying a good practice. November 20, 1879, he married Miss Jennie Whaley, daughter of Benjamin and Jane (Bush) Whaley, natives of Virginia, but early settlers of Kentucky. To this union have been born four children, viz: Bessie, Hudson, Virginia and Mary. Mr. Rutherford is a member of the F.& A.M. fraternity.
