Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, 1887 Bath County HON. J. M. NESBITT was born in Bath County, Ky., March 29, 1819, and is the only child of Hugh and Maria (McAlister) Nesbitt. Hugh Nesbitt was born in Tennessee, came to Kentucky when young, and settled in Bath County. He was a saddler by trade, and was a son of James and Sarah (Logan) Nesbitt, natives of Ireland. Mrs. Maria Nesbitt was born in Richmond, Va. J.M. Nesbitt was reared on a farm and attended the common school in the neighborhood. In 1837 he was appointed deputy sheriff of his native county, which position he retained until 1830. He then went to Mount Sterling, Ky., and read law under Judge French and Hon. B. J. Peters, the latter of whom served sixteen years as one of the Judges of the Kentucky Court of Appeals. In August, 1842, Mr. Nesbitt was admitted to the bar, and now ranks with the best lawyers in eastern Kentucky. He then located in Owingsville, Ky., and opened a law office, serving as county attorney under the old Constitution eight years, as well as one term under the new. He was one of the youngest members of the Constitutional Convention of Kentucky, and was Commonwealth Attorney for six years; he was also one of the Commissioners who revised the Statutes of Kentucky in 1873. Being always a Democrat he was nominated as one of the Electors in the Presidential race between Pierce and Scott, and was put on the ticket for President of the Board of Internal Improvements, which was headed by Burley L. Clark for Governor. March 9, 1842, Mr. Nesbitt was united in marriage to Mary Calk, of Montgomery County, Ky., daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Keys) Calk. Of the nine children who blessed this union, eight are still living, viz: Thomas Y., a resident of Maysville, Ky.; J. J., a lawyer, present Representative of Bath and Rowan Counties; W. C., a dentist; Andrew J., Mary B., Charles W., Sallie and Edward H. Charles W. read law under his father, and was admitted to the bar in 1883, and in 1886 was elected county attorney. Mrs. Mary Nesbitt died July 30, 1887, having been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South for many years.
