Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, 1887 Bath County COL. J. S. HURT was born in Montgomery County, Ky., May 21, 1826. His parents were Joshua and Elizabeth (Pedworth) Hurt. Col. J. S. Hurt received his education at the common schools of his native county and at Mount Sterling. At the age of fifteen he moved to Bath County, where he has since resided. In 1847 he commenced to read law under Hon. Andrew Trumbo, and was admitted to the bar in 1849. He was in the Mexican war under command of McKee, and took part in the battle of Buena Vista. In 1849 he went to California and engaged in gold mining and merchandising for two years, when he returned to Owingsville, Ky., and practiced law until 1861. In September of the latter year he entered the Federal army as Major of the 24th Kentucky Infantry, was subsequently Lieutenant-Colonel, and in the spring of 1863 he was promoted to Colonel, which position he held until the close of the war. He was mustered out at Covington, Ky., January 21, 1865, having participated in the battles of Shiloh, Perryville, siege of Knoxville, Resaca, Kenesaw Mountain, siege of Atlanta, and many others. Since the close of the war he has been engaged in the practice of his profession at Owingsville, Ky. He is a member of the Christian Church. In politics he is Democratic.
