WILLIAM M. WILSON was born February 14, 1823, in Barren County. His 
father, James Wilson, was born about 1798 in Caroline County, Va. In 
early life he engaged in carpentering, and later in farming, which he 
continued until his death October 27, 1823.  He was a son of James 
Wilson, Sr., who was also a farmer, a native of Virginia, and of scotch-
Irish descent. James Wilson, Jr., was married, about 1821, to Martha, 
daughter of Joel and Martha (Rhodes) Yancey.  She was born about 1800, 
also in the State of Virginia. To this union were born one son, William 
M.  The latter married, Octobr 7, 1841, Nancy Elizabeth, daughter of 
Theophilus D. and Lucinda (Martin) Stark. To them have been born Martha 
Y. (Crane), James T. (deceased), Mary L. (Garnett), William M., Charles 
R., Lizzie (deceased), Emma (deceased), Katie (Curd) and Fannie M. When 
William M. Wilson was quite young his parents died, and he was taken in 
charge by his maternal grandfather, with whom he lived until the 
latter's death, which took place in our subject's thirteenth year. He 
then lived with his uncle, John B. Wilson, until 1841, when he removed to 
the farm where he now resides.  He has since that time been more or less 
actively engaged in farming, in connection with which he engaged for 
about thirty years in the tobacco trade, first as a buyer of leaf 
tobacco on his own farm; and later for about thirteen years as a member 
of the firm of McGuiar, Helm & Co., commission merchants and proprietors 
of the "Ninth Street Warehouse" of Louisville, Ky. As a member of that 
firm, as well as in his other walks of life, he commanded the respect of 
all with whom he was associated, and in order, in a measure, to show the 
esteem in which he was held, they presented him, on his retiring from 
active life, with a magnificient silver tea service.  As a citizen he 
has received marks of the esteem in which he is held, having been 
appointed a delegate to the Farmer's National Congress, as well as 
having represented his district in the Senate of his native State.  He 
is a believer in the doctrines of the Methodist Church, but is not at 
present a member of any church organization. In politics he is a 
Democrat.
