D. and Sarah (Smith) Shipley, was born June 18,1839, in Hawkins County, Tenn., and is the eldest in a family of six sons. At the age of thirteen he moved to Barren County with his parents, and at twenty-two commenced life for himself; he farmed five years and then sold groceries at Glasgow one year. He married, December 12, 1863, Mildred Jackman, of Barren County. Her father, William Jackman, is a native of Kentucky, and of Irish descent; his wife's maiden name as Leah Stefey [sic]. She is a native of Wythe County, Va., and of German descent. Mr. Jackman was an orphan boy, learned the tanner's trade in Versailles, Ky., and at the age of twenty migrated to Barren County, Ky. He is now seventy-five years old; he and wife are the parents of nine daughters and two sons, all of whom are living, the youngest being twenty-nine years old. Mr. Shipley's mother died February 27, 1879, in her sixty-fourth year; his father is still living aged seventy-nine years. His Grandmother Shipley's maiden name was Wells; his Grandmother Smith's maiden name was Allen. To Mr. and Mrs. Shipley eight children were born, six now living: Lela, Dove, Tim J., John A., Calvin M., and Josephine. Mr. Shipley and wife are members of the Christian Church. After marriage he located seven miles east of Glasgow; two years later he moved to Beaver Creek; and in December, 1875, settled on 117 acres where he now resides, near Glasgow Junction; he now owns 200 acres, highly improved and cultivated. His father, E. D. Shipley, was born in Sullivan County, Tenn., on the Holston River; in his younger days he was a boat-builder, and transported salt down the Holton and Tennessee Rivers to Ditto's Landing. After marriage he taught school and engaged in farming; in 1852 he moved to Barren County and settled on a farm of 180 acres on Beaver Creek. His father, Benjamin Shipley, was also a farmer and boat-builder, and of Welsh and English origin. Mrs. Sarah Shipley was a daughter of Calvin and Nancy (Allen) Smith, natives of North Carolina, and early settlers of Tennessee. Calvin Smith was of English descent, a farmer and miller, and a soldier in the war of 1812. His father-in-law's name was Charles Allen, and he was a soldier in the Revolutionary war; his wife's maiden name was Hunt. Mr. Shipley is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for S. A.
