McFerran, late of the U. S. Army, acquired much distinction in the army. He was a son of Judge Wm. R. McFerran. When he died he was a Brevet Brig. Gen. and Assistant Quarter Master General of the U. S. Army. He was a graduate of West Point in 1843. C. Tompkins, Jr., was appointed a cadet by the Hon. J. R. Underwood while in Congress. C. Tompkins died before he entered West Point, so J. R. Underwood gave the appointment to J. McFerran. Upon examination McFerran was found to be six months under the age required by law. Underwood placed him at school in Washington until he could enter, paying all expenses, refusing any remuneration, saying if John turned out well he could pay him. He died at Louisville, aged fifty-two, leaving a wife and child - a daughter. After graduating he was promoted to Brevet 2nd Lieutenant 3rd Infantry, was at the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma in the Mexican War; assistant Quartermaster in 1855; November, 1863, Chief of Staff to Brig. Gen. Carelton; 1865 in the action of the Peralta, New Mexico; March 13, 1865, for faithful and meritorious services during the rebellion was made Brevet Lieutenant Colonel, Brevet Co., and Brevet Brig. General U. S. Army. At the time of his death was Deputy Quartermaster General U. S. Army, and Chief Quartermaster Department of the South.
