LOCKE, a native of Barren County, Ky., was born January 25, 1858, and is the eldest of seven children born to John A. and Sarah E. (Wilson) Locke. John A. Locke is of English descent, and was born in Barren County, Ky., in 1830; at the age of fourteen or fifteen years he commenced clerking in a dry goods store at Glasagow, which he continued for ten or fifteen years. He then engaged, until 1863, in general merchandising at Prewitt's Knob, on his own account; since then he has followed agricultural pursuits, and has also served for several years as a deputy county clerk at Cave City. His wife is a native of Barren County and was born in 1833. His father, Rev. James Locke, was a prominent minister in the Baptist Church, and a son of Jacob Locke, a Virginian, who with his wife and family immigrated to Kentucky in an early day, where he was one of the first Baptist ministers, and organized the Green River Association. William N. Locke was educated at the common and select schools of the country, and at the age of twenty engaged as a salesman in a drug store in Glasgow; one year later he engaged in the business at the same place on his own account, and has since followed it successfully. In July, 1885, he formed a partnership with J. B. Lessenberry, under the firm name of Locke & Lessenberry; they carry a large and well selected stock of drugs, medicines, paints, oils, druggists' sundries, books and stationery, amounting to $4,000 or $5,000; their average annual sales amount to $12,000 or $15,000. September 1, 1881, Mr. Locke married Ella A. Bell; she was born in Missouri, June 4, 1859, and has borne her husband two sons, William G. and Thomas M. Mr. Locke and wife are members of the Presbyterian Church; he is a member of the K. of H., and politically a Democrat.
