HENDERSON was born September 3, 1809, in Buckingham County, Va., where he was reared to manhood. In December, 1829, he moved to Monroe County, Ky., and engaged as a merchant's clerk for one year each in Scottsville and Martinsville. In 1833 he began business for himself, and merchandised for one year at each of the following places: Port Oliver, Scottsville and Pageville. He then superintended for two years the salt works on Barren River, near Port Oliver, Allen County. In 1848 he engaged in farming and trading at Holly Springs, and returned in 1850 to Barren County, where he has since resided. He has been twice married; first, in 1833, to Elzira Fant, who has borne him the following children: Sarah F. (Cole), John F., Virginia W. (Lewis and Green), Narcissa A. (Jameson and Griggs), Andrew J., William R., Cornelia D. (Spillman), Quitman B., Lorenzo D. and Ivanora F. (Smith). Mrs. Elzira Henderson was born April 16, 1815, a daughter of Fielding and Frances (Harding) Fant, of Allen County, and died August 19, 1872. Mr. Henderson's second marriage took place July 15, 1875, with Nannie P., daughter of Thomas F. and Elizabeth J. (Lewis) Smith, of Barren County; she was born February 1, 1856, and to their union the following children have been born: Peter C., Thomas D., Mary J., and Nannie Lois. Mr. Henderson has always been a Union man; he lost thirteen slaves valued at $15,000 by the late war; is now engaged in the loan and real estate business, and is the owner of 700 acres of well cultivated land, besides having given a goodly inheritance to his children. He was for many years a magistrate and member of the court of claims of Barren County. His father, John Henderson, a native of Virginia, was an officer in the militia, and died in Allen County, Ky., in 1833, aged sixty-four years; he was of Irish descent, and married Sarah Fortune, of Nelson County, Va., and to their union the following children were born: Bennett E., Emily A. (Whitson), Lorendo D., John H., Jefferson W., Turena A. (Moore), Jackson R., Nathaniel and Nicholas (twins) and Benjamin, deceased. Mrs. Sarah Henderson died in Texas, about 1870, aged seventy- five years.
